Sobey Family to Offer MBA Scholarships at Queen's School of Business

Donald R. Sobey and his son Rob, two alumni of Canada Queen's School of Business, have collaborated with their alma mater to offer scholarships for Queen's School of Business MBA students from Atlantic Canada which is made up of the most eartern Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island with a population of 2.3 Million.

The D&R Sobey Atlantic MBA scholarship fund of CAD 4 million will support several scholarships each year and is available immediately for eligible MBA students entering the program in January 2015.

Donald and Rob Sobey have donated to the University in the past by creating the D&R Sobey Atlantic Undergraduate Scholarship for students from Atlantic Canada of their first year of the Bachelor of Commerce at Queen's School of Business. Each scholarship has a total value of $78 000 to support students cover tuition fees, accomodation and travel costs. Since its inception in 1999, more than $3.7 million has been awarded to 89 students based on merit.

Donald Sobey received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Queen's School of Business. He is Chair Emeritus of Empire Company Limited, a conglomerate engaged mostly in food retail and related real estate through its wholly-owned subsidiary and grocery chain Sobeys Inc. He was President of Empire from 1969 until his appointment as Chair in 1985. Rob Sobey was president and CEO of Lawtons Drug Stores which operates throughout Atlantic Canada.

Application deadline for the 2015 D&R Sobey Atlantic Undergraduate Scholarship is December 1, 2014, and January 5, 2015 for the MBA scholarship.
